FINAL FANTASY XI Is Celebrating 24 Years of Service! (05/16/2026)

Greetings, adventurers!

Today marks 24 years since FINAL FANTASY XI first began service. On behalf of everyone from the development and operations teams, I would like to thank all of you for helping to make it happen.

At the end of our special program commemorating the game's 20th anniversary, I mentioned that we'd do our best to help the game reach its 25th anniversary too. Amazingly, that's now just a year away. Next year will also mark the 40th anniversary of the FINAL FANTASY series, making it a momentous occasion for the franchise as a whole.

As we head toward these milestones, our development philosophy for the game's 24th anniversary is to "expand the game's foundation" for both the present and the future.

・Over the past few years, we have created a solid base for the various elements that make up the game as it stands today. In the year to come, we plan to introduce additional measures to further strengthen that foundation and aim for even greater heights.

・We plan to streamline the progression path for adventurers from Item Level 119 and up so that it is easier to take on the game's higher-level content. In particular, character progression after obtaining Ambuscade gear has been rather rushed, so we plan to implement additional content and equipment to help fill in those gaps.

As a way of conveying our commitment to elevating our development vision, we teamed up with the talented Animation Filmmaker, and long-time adventurer Waboku, to create a special video—complete with an all-new song by Naoshi Mizuta. It's jam-packed with iconic nostalgia for our adventurers, which we hope you'll enjoy!

I'd also like to give you an update on the current status of the items I mentioned in my New Year's greetings, as well as what was discussed on the May 15th episode of Freshly Picked Vana'diel.

Strengthening alter egos

As part of the May version update, we added the combat skill and magic skill parameters to the Alter Ego Points menu in order to upgrade your alter egos and help expand the scope of your adventures. We also introduced some additional ways to acquire the alter ego points themselves.
Now that we've finished our additions to the alter ego points system for the time being, we are moving on to the alter ego equipment system next. There should be some progress on this endeavor by the end of the year or perhaps the beginning of next year, so we hope to have more information to share around November, through channels such as Freshly Picked Vana'diel.

Limbus

Limbus was designed to be content that transcends the game’s usual group boundaries so that all adventurers could benefit.
As per our original plan, the entire system should be completed once we add a boss monster that is one level higher than the current one. Like I mentioned on Freshly Picked Vana'diel, we will be implementing some new weapons at the same time, so I hope you will work together with your fellow adventurers and give it a try! Also, the music that plays is a new song that is a special arrangement of another song relating to a certain boss. It'll be different between Temenos and Apollyon, so be sure to check them both.

Additional high-tier mission battlefields

We are working to implement high-tier mission battlefields based on the three additional scenarios that were available as downloadable content. It is our goal to deliver the boss battle for the first one, "A Crystalline Prophecy," around summertime.
The second one will likely be released after a gap of about six months, but the plan is to roll them out gradually. Please note that, like other high-tier mission battlefields, you will need to complete the scenario in order to take on these boss battles. I hope all of you take this time to progress through the scenarios so that you're ready when the battles eventually drop.

Placement of new notorious monsters

This is new content that we are currently planning in which we place new notorious monsters in existing fields and dungeons so that players can defeat them.
In terms of rewards, players will be able to acquire items that are even more powerful than Ambuscade gear and reforge them to be equivalent to Malignance gear, which should help fill a gap in current gear progression. Currently, we hope to implement this feature sometime between summer and autumn of this year.

Story replay feature

We are working on a system that enables you to replay the missions for San d'Oria, Bastok, and Windurst, even if you have already completed them in the past. The early missions were created after much trial and error, and since the method for creating them differed for each nation, it is taking a considerable amount of effort to properly analyze and organize the relevant information. As such, we plan to take our time and make sure everything is implemented smoothly, with an estimated completion date around spring of next year. Please keep an eye out for further updates to come.

I also have some other announcements that I'd like to cover.

Over time, the official website for the game has accumulated numerous announcements and various other entries since its initial launch. As such, we recently migrated the site's contents to a more secure server.
Although it depends on your current setup, you may still see portions of the old site at times, but should gradually be redirected to the new site over time. The new site is also optimized for mobile devices, so we hope you take a look and see the changes for yourself.

We are also preparing a number of special events to help celebrate FFXI's 24th anniversary. These events will be for the benefit of those of you currently playing the game, as well as a "Return Home to Vana'diel and Discount Campaign" for adventurers who may be new to the game or have been away from Vana'diel for a while. I've listed some of them below, so if any of them interest you, please take advantage of this opportunity to experience the joys that present-day Vana'diel has to offer.

24th Vana'versary Event: The Elite Adventurer Training Program

This brand-new event has you seeking out strange anomalies throughout the town. The rewards for the event include some equipment featuring an all-new look, as well as items that can be used to enhance your alter egos.

Adventurer Gratitude Campaign

This campaign provides you with fabulous weekly login rewards. The rewards lineup has also been refreshed, with an item that is sure to please new and returning adventurers alike.

Moogle Support Campaign for New & Returning Adventurers

If you log in before Tuesday, June 9, you can obtain special tickets that can be exchanged for useful alter egos such as Shantotto II and Kupofried, as well as a ring that helps you earn job points.

24th Vana'versary Celebration Campaign

This is a special initiative where new campaigns are added each week. We are planning a variety of different content that will run through Tuesday, June 9. Highlights include an experience and capacity point campaign to help level up your characters and an Alter Ego Expo Campaign.

There will also be an event that lets you obtain Item Level 119 equipment. We've prepared a list of the upcoming events, so please see here for more details.

The fact that the game has continued to thrive for so long is due to the tremendous support it has received from all of you adventurers out there and the "culture" you have created around the world of Vana'diel. Of course, I also need to thank the many members of the development and operations teams that created the foundation for the game as it exists today. You all have my utmost gratitude.

The game's success has forced us to update our long-term goals for the project yet again, so please rest assured that the entire FFXI team will be hard at work to further solidify the game's foundation and help it reach its 30th anniversary.

We hope that you continue to enjoy the world of FFXI for many years to come!
