Equipment

This year’s census marks our fifth look into the most powerful weapons and armor in Vana’diel. Due to the exceptionally positive response from FINAL FANTASY XI’s players in the past, this section has become an indispensible part of the Vana’diel Census.

In addition to the number of relic and mythic weapons acquired up until now, we will also be covering the number of Empyrean weapons and armor, including equipment that was upgraded through Trial of the Magians.

Let’s first take a look at relic weapons. The number of relic weapons acquired has increased from 3,985 at the time of the last census to a new total of 6,640, a strong indicator of their lasting popularity. One reason for this popularity may be due to players being able to strengthen their weapons through Trial of the Magians, so that even now relic weapons can be heralded as among the most powerful in Vana’diel. This year, we researched the different stages and levels of strength and found that roughly half of relic weapon owners had upgraded their arms to level 90.

Next, we move to mythic weapons, which have also increased somewhat since the last census, if not to the degree of relics. While we expect to see a rise in popularity changes after the planned Aht Urhgan adjustments, at the present most mythic weapons remain extremely rare. Who could become the very first brave adventurer in Vana’diel to obtain the axe Aymur?

This year, we also looked into the latest set of legendary arms, Empyrean weapons, as well as the standard weapons that share Empyrean weapon skills.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the popularity of the ninja and monk jobs is primarily responsible for the abundance of the two most numerous weapons, the katana Kannagi and the hand-to-hand weapon Verethragna. The number of acquired Empyrean weapons has already surpassed both relic and mythic weapons, but the number that has been upgraded to level 90 remains at around 24% of the total.

Continuing on, we come to job-specific Empyrean armor. Because these sets of armor can also be strengthened through Trial of the Magians, we have categorized them by level and equipment area.

The most numerous types were for white mage, black mage, thief, and ninja, which are some of the most popular jobs. Looking at the breakdown by body part, you can see a preference for those pieces with particularly enticing attributes, as well as those for which seals and upgrade items are most readily obtained.

Lastly, we come to data on Empyrean seals and upgrade items. The following data shows the total number of items acquired across all Worlds during the five day period following the May 10 version update.

At the top of the list are the seals and upgrade items dropped by monsters that also yield Empyrean weapon-related items. While Empyrean armor is very popular in its own right, it would seem that the popularity of Empyrean weapons has had a large influence on these numbers. A new method for acquiring Empyrean upgrade items was added in the May 10 version update, and we learned that during the following five days, upgrade item acquisition increased by about ten percent.
